That’s what it feels like watching my mother braid my daughter’s hair in the vintage salon chair that I sat in more times than I could ever remember. Having my best friend from childhood hold my youngest’s hand along a beach, mirroring ourselves from decades ago. Seeing my daughters and their cousins playing on our street; walking paths my siblings and I didn’t realize that we would so quickly outgrow.
Raising my own children away from our family (and the culture that comes with it) was, and still is, a challenge. It does have some disheartening moments. But these are always overshadowed by my great appreciation for the life we created here, all on our own. It most definitely makes me cherish every moment back home – especially those surreal ones. Happy Monday.
